Fluid Art Paint Pouring Beginner's Materials List

  1. Canvas or Surface:

    • Stretched canvases
    • Wood panels & rounds
    • Other non-porous, suitable surfaces (Ceramic Tiles, Acrylic Sheets)
    • Canvas boards will warp (NOT recommended)
  2. Pouring Medium:

    • Acrylic pouring medium
    • Water
  3. Acrylic Paints:

    • Assorted acrylic paints in desired colors (not craft paint, artist paint)
    • Metallic or iridescent paints react differently than regular colors, use to create cool effects
  4. Mixing Cups:

    • Plastic or disposable cups for mixing paint and medium
  5. Stirring Sticks:

    • Wooden uncolored craft pop sticks or plastic sticks for mixing paint and medium thoroughly, plastic can be reused again and again
  6. Drop Cloth/Plastic Sheets/ Trash Bag cut open:

    • To protect your work area from spills and drips
  7. Pouring Containers:

    • Various sizes and shapes for different pouring techniques (cups, squeeze bottles, etc.)
  8. Palette Knife or Paper Towel:

    • For swiping and creating unique patterns
  9. Blow Dryer or Heat Gun:

    • To create cells if adding oil to your paints as well as move the paint with air for certain techniques but please note that the heat and fast drying can affect your paints drying properly as well as the oil leaving an oily mess on top of your painting that's hard to protect later with varnish or resin. 
  10. Silicone Oil or Coconut Milk Hair Serum (Optional):

    • For creating cells in the paint easily (Think oil and water)
  11. Painter's or Masking Tape:

    • Tape up the back of your canvas or substrate of choice to protect it from drips. After drying remove for a flawless professional looking finished piece
  12. Gloves:

    • Latex or nitrile gloves to protect your hands
  13. Apron or old clothing:

    • To protect your clothes from paint splatters
  14. Leveling Tools:

    • Bubble level or leveling app on your phone to ensure a flat work surface and substrate
  15. Varnish or Sealant:

    • Gloss or matte varnish to protect and finish the artwork (Optional)
    • Some techniques use varnishes in the paint so this isn't needed
  16. Brushes or Paint Pens & Markers:

    • For any touch-ups or additional details after drying
  17. Drying Rack or Elevated Surface:

    • To allow proper airflow while drying without sticking to surfaces
